Spend your day in the kitchen of the Lippitt Farm House learning how to bake traditional holiday breads and cakes! Fire and bake in the brick bake oven, as well as a bake kettle, or Dutch oven. Share your delicious goods at the end of the session or take them home to impress your family!

Learn the techniques involved in this gardening method that is fun for the entire family! Find out how to set up your grid, which plants to select, and how to maintain them. This low-maintenance, high-yield method requires little room and is great to get children interested in gardening. We will even give you some of our heirloom seeds and seedlings to get started!

Jump-start your garden with this ancient technique that can beat the late winter cold! You will first construct your own 3 ft x 2 ft frame to take home, then learn how to set it up by working on the hot frames in our own historic gardens. We’ll even send you home with a hand-picked variety of heirloom seeds and seedlings to get started right away!

Learn how to cook a delicious meal on an open fire, using all natural ingredients! Whether you want to be able to cook at home or out camping, these valuable skills will delight the taste buds of your family or guests! Peel, chop and slice the ingredients yourself before cooking it together and, of course, sharing the meal at the end. You will be amazed how simple delicious food can be!

Americana Academy Workshop: Introduction to Blacksmithing

Discover the art of blacksmithing in this introductory course where you will learn the essentials of forge safety, building and maintaining a fire, handling tools, heating metal, and starting on your own creations. Under the instruction and guidance of our master blacksmith, you will make your own forged hooks to take home – a nice addition to any kitchen or garage! This course is suitable for absolute beginners (18 years minimum).

Teachers are invited to visit The Farmers' Museum without students for a day to learn more about the programs and resources available to teachers. Teacher Appreciation Days are a time for the The Farmers' Museum to say "Thank you!" to our school educators. Pre K-12 educators are admitted free with valid ID or proof of educator status. Stock your medicine cabinet with a variety of home-made remedies for everyday ailments – bruises, cuts, burns or sore muscles – all made from natural products! Learn about the properties of plants, from the back yard as well as from the spice rack, and how to make tinctures, extracts, balms, salves and rubs, then make your own to take home. It’s a cheap, natural and fun alternative to a trip to the pharmacy!
