Phrenology Illustrated Poster
Phrenology Illustrated is a broadside based on a page taken from a book of the same subject. Phrenology, very popular in the mid-nineteenth century, was a “scientific” study of the shape of an individual’s skull used to determine their psychological profile. It is considered archaic today but there are some who say it was the beginning of the modern concept that certain areas of the brain control different aspects of personality.
The poster is hand set and printed on a Washington press in the Middlefield Printing Office at The Farmers' Museum.
